US Plant Fires Immigrant Protestors
Washington
A group of 21 workers from the meat processing plant Wolverine Packing of Detroit were laid-off for attending a march in defense of immigrants´ rights in the US.
La Opinion daily of LA says the management claimed unjustified absence on Mar 27 of these Mexicans on their staff for six years that joined the 20,000-people march in Detroit.
Minerva Ramirez, single mother of two, wondered how after six years of work for the company she could be laid off for one day's absence.
Several organizations and the Mexican Consulate in Detroit sided with the workers and appealed to the Commission for Equal Employment Opportunities and the Civil Rights Division of Michigan.
