Bolivia Seeks Path to Sea
La Paz
A mass mobilization demanding sea access is being readied Sunday in Bolivia to complement the visit of President Evo Morales to Chile.
Upon his arrival from Chile, Morales confirmed the rally, scheduled for March 23, "Day of the Sea," in La Paz, and called for grassroots bodies to demonstrate, along with authorities and the Armed Forces, for an outlet to the sea.
In the so-called War of the Pacific in the late 19th century, Chile took over from Bolivia a portion of its southern territory, depriving it of a sea outlet. So far, negotiations on this issue have failed.
Likewise, Morales expressed the willingness of Michelle BacheletĀ“s government to hold talks over both nationĀ“s existing problems.
To fulfill that aim, the Bolivian dignitary informed of the creation of a high-level commission to design strategies and concrete proposals on the issue.
