Bolivia’s prosecutor requests trial against former president
LA PAZ, Bolivia
Bolivia’s former President Eduardo Rodríguez could face a treason trial for his role in shipping more than two dozen Chinese-made shoulder-launched missiles to the United States for destruction last year, the public prosecutor’s office said.
Prosecutor General Pedro Gareca submitted a request to the Supreme Court on Thursday that also charges former Defense Minister Gonzalo Méndez.
Gareca alleged that Rodríguez and Méndez subjected the South Ameri-can nation to foreign control and engaged in espionage, among other allegations.
Under Bolivian law, the Supreme Court will determine whether to send the case to Congress, which can authorize a trial by a vote of two-thirds.
Rodríguez was appointed caretaker president after the resignation of Carlos Mesa in last June.
