New UN initiative against the blockade circulating

A resolution against the U.S. blockade of Cuba is circulating among the 192 member countries in preparation for a new international vote rejecting the U.S. measures.

The document: The need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, is contained in UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s annual report, which reflects the opposition to this measure of more than 120 countries and institutions.

In a vote taken at the conclusion of the November 2006 debate over the issue, the Cuban proposed resolution against the U.S. received the support of 183 nations.

The U.S. was left in a clear minority with its No vote, with only Israel, the Marshall Islands and Palau, while Micronesia preferred to abstain.

Cuban diplomats believe that the resolution will receive broad support for the 16th consecutive time and do not rule out that it will receive a record number of Yes votes. (PL)

CALL TO REFLECTION

UNITED NATIONS, October 24.–– Cuba has called for "a deep and thoughtful reflection" over the situation of countries underdeveloped as a result of the current world economic order and has criticized the growing military spending of the wealthier powers.

"With only 10% of the resources currently used for military purposes, the Millennium Development Goals could be met," declared Rodrigo Malmierca, Cuban ambassador, speaking before the General Assembly.
