Most Chavez Supporters Registered in PSUV

Nearly 60 percent of Venezuelans who voted for President Hugo Chavez in the December elections have registered for the PSUV (United Socialist Party), political analyst Alberto Muller said on Monday.

In statements to the program En Vivo, on Venezolana de Television, General Muller, a member of the PSUV Permanent Commission, highlighted the fact that 5.4 million people have registered to join the party.

I estimated 3-3.5 million subscriptions on the basis of world statistics, according to which strong support for a political movement would be about 30 percent of voters, he added.

General Muller noted that the registration process, which concluded on Sunday, exceeded 50 percent of voters who went to the polls to back Chavez for another six-year mandate.

The fact that so many people registered to join a party that will lead the construction of socialism in Venezuela shows the political power of this revolutionary process.

The opposition cannot mobilize more than 10 percent of voters to support its cause, Muller said.
