Venezuela-US Detente, Sort of
Caracas
Dec 15
As part of efforts to achieve dialogue with the US, the Venezuelan political agenda focuses on respect for the country s sovereignty and cessation of anti-governmental actions.
After the electoral win of President Hugo Chavez on December 3, Washington activated some mechanisms to regenerate contacts with Caracas, and even recognized the president s victory.
As the first step, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro met with US ambassador William Brownfield in Caracas to present viewpoints on issues of bilateral interest.
After the first meeting, Maduro stated the country has grounds to "doubt the US government s word," however, Venezuela can hold respectful talks to find dialogue mechanisms.
In that context, the recognition of Chavez legitimacy is a historic step that paves the way for respectful exchange, "not only with our country but with the rest of the continent," he added.
The extradition of notorious terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, and former officers blamed for attacks against embassies in Venezuela would be a sign of good will and readiness to talk, the minister noted.
In the meantime, Brownfield said his country is willing to keep exchanging viewpoints to move ahead in 2007.
