Church to Arbitrate Oaxaca Strife

The Oaxaca church announced on Monday it will mediate the conflict still affecting that Mexican state, where prosecution, revenge, rejection, and repression have reached alarming levels.

Assistant bishop Oscar Mario Campos said in a release the diocese already began following up concrete cases and information on illegal arrests.

"Oaxaca has been through a painful situation over the last few hours, with deep social, economic, and political imbalances," Campos said, adding it is necessary to go into the causes that provoked them.

The crisis has left a people marked by social division, which calls for a structural reform of the State, but "any proposal must go beyond particular interests," he stated in the text.

Religious and human rights organizations asserted the government committed all sorts of outrages in its effort to try to crush the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca.
