Evo Morales takes over CAN

Bolivian President Evo Morales will preside over the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) to prevent it from disappearing and launch it again, authorities in the capital city of La Paz announced Wednesday.

On the occasion of the next summit scheduled for July in Ecuador, "all efforts will be made for CAN to continue, rather than surviving, fulfilling its objectives," Government Spokesman Alex Contreras explained with regard to Morales' decision.

CAN incumbency is revolving and annual. Last year, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez took office and should hand it over to Bolivia in July, during the next meeting of the Andean Presidential Council.

Bolivian government authorities view CAN as fundamental, important, Bolivian Minister for Planning Development Carlos Villegas said, and acknowledged that the block is currently going through a delicate situation.
