Venez to Aid Bolivians Get ID Papers
Santa Cruz, Bolivia
A campaign to provide identity papers to more than a million undocumented people, who otherwise would not be able to vote, was inaugurated by Bolivian President Evo Morales, who thanked Venezuela for support in this effort.
At the ceremony to launch the campaign in a populous neighborhood in eastern Santa Cruz, Morales expressed appreciation to Caracas for supplying information technology equipment and experts.
In its first phase, the plan "I exist..., Bolivia Exists," calls for giving ID papers to 500,000 of the estimated 1.81 million citizens who do not have these documents and thus are unable to vote.
Once they have papers, the people will be able to cast their votes to elect delegates to the Constituent Assembly in July.
Morales discarded attacks by minority conservative political groups who question Venezuelan collaboration in the campaign as well as Cuban support to the national literacy program begun Monday.
