WFTU Supports Venezuela in Conflict with Exxon-Mobil

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) slammed the legal actions taken by U.S’ Exxon-Mobil multinational oil company against Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and backed Chavez government’s response.

In a statement broadcasted from Havana, WFTU’s Americas Secretariat called on all its members, friends and progressive organizations to support the workers and people of Venezuela and demand respect for their total independence, reported Granma newspaper.

Ramon Cardona Nuevo, WFTU secretary for the Americas, denounced the political and economic interference of the United States in Venezuela’s domestic issues by creating shortages of basic products in the South American country to asphyxiate the population.

Cardona pointed out that Exxon-Mobil is looking to unleash an economic war against Venezuela and provoke discontent and unrest to overthrow the government of Hugo Chavez.

The WFTU noted that movements and organizations around the world are aware of the fact that behind the actions of the American transnational is the US government, which is capable of replacing sanctions with bombs and missiles.

The World Federation of Trade Unions in the Americas stressed in its denouncement that today’s Venezuela represents the conscience of Latin American independence, going against the ambitions of transnational corporations that seek privatization and control of natural resources.
