The Fire and the Word campaign in the US is launched

February 9th, 2008

Compañeros and compañeras from the Other United States

Compañeros and compañeras Adherents to the Zezta Internazional

The campaign The Fire and the Word informs you that all is ready to begin presenting in the U.S. the materials that make up this initiative in solidarity with the Zapatista peoples of Chiapas. A book, a musical collection, a photographic exhibit, and a video about the Zapatista struggle will be presented in cultural centers, communities, universities, alternative radios, and galleries, among other spaces.

This campaign was born on November 2003 through an initiative of the Mexican magazine Rebeldía, in the context of the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and the 10th anniversary of the indigenous insurrection that shook the world. Over four years later, with the publication of the book The Fire and the Word, a history of the Zapatista movement, in separate English and Spanish editions, both published by City Lights, all of the campaign's materials are presented in the U.S. thanks to the support of various collectives and activists interested in the Zapatista movement.

The presentations of The Fire and the Word (book, CDs, photographic exhibit, and videos) begin this February 11 in San Diego and travel through Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Sacramento, and Humboldt, in the state of California. Afterwards the campaign will visit some cities in Arizona and Texas, New York, and Chicago. We have also received invitations from the states of Oregon, North Carolina, and Washington, among others, which will be covered during a second stage later this year.

*All potential profits, both from the sale of the materials (book and musical collection) and from the events organized (conferences at universities, concerts, or any other event) will be destined to finance projects of the Zapatista Good Government Boards, as has been the case in all tours organized in other countries.

*The campaign EZLN: The Fire and the Word is organized by people and collectives in solidarity. The campaign does not represent or substitute the voice of the Zapatistas; it merely makes known a history of rebellion that, for many of us, is still an alternative.

For more information on the objectives of The Fire and the Word and the materials presented, see www.elfuegoylapalabra.org or write to elfuegoylapalabraeu@gmail.com
