Cuban 5 Case in Vermont

The case of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in United status will be presented this week in the Vermont Law School and Burlington

College, as part of the campaign for their release.

According to a note from the National Committee for the Liberation f the Five, the February 12-13 exhibitions will be in charge of lawyer Leonard Weinglass, member of the Five defense team, and Gloria La Riva, member of US committee demanding their freedom.

"The Vermont Lawyers Guild states that the knowledge and participation in their struggle will make the world a better place for everyone. A better world is possible," points out the call.

Members from the Vermont Law School of the National Lawyers Guild have been arduously working to educate and encourage the student community of the laws school on the case of the Five, the note states.

Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez are still in US jails since September 12, 1998, for only gathering information about terrorist activities carried out by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida.

Their sentences ran from 15 years to double life imprisonment, the latter to Gerardo Hernandez.

On August 20, 2007, the Cuban Five defense team appeared in a hearing held at the US Court of Appeals 11th Circuit in Atlanta, where they denounced political manipulations of the case.

Lawyers refuted three topics: the accusation of conspiracy to murder against Gerardo Hernandez, that of espionage against Hernandez, Guerrero and Labanino, and the evident bad behavior by the US attorney.

The sentence by judges from the US Court in Atlanta about the appeal is still pending.
