A leading opponent of Venezuela's controversial President Hugo Chavez has been shot at after casting his ballot at a polling station during a tense referendum vote.

Millions of Venezuelans are voting on whether to allow Chavez to stay in power for as long as he keeps winning elections in a major constitutional reform.

Defence Minister Raul Budwel reportedly quit his post because of his opposition to the President's move, and today nearly paid the price with his life.
