Brazil forecasts record sugarcane and ethanol production

Brazil's Companhia Nacional do Abastecimiento is forecasting record levels for the 2007-2008 sugarcane production fuelled (pun intended) by the expansion of ethanol. According to this official organisation, this year's production of sugarcane will reach 547.2 million tons, 15.2 percent more than last year's 474.8 million.

The uses for this huge amounts of sugarcane are divided this way: 40.5 percent for sugar manufacturing (30 million tons of sugar) and a whopping 46 percent to produce 21.3 billion liters of ethanol, 22 percent more than last year's production. The rest of the sugarcane is used for producing specific sugars, panela and liquor (cachaça for caipirinhas, among others).

Business News Americas reports that Petrobras will not meet its ethanol target for 2007.

The company’s downstream director said that although they expected steady exports to Venezuela, the country decided to use methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) instead of ethanol. Petrobras expected to export one billion liters of ethanol through contracts in 2007

India to import ethanol and biodiesel from Brazil

In India, Bharat Petroleum signed with Brazilian giant Petrobras to bring import biodiesel and ethanol. There has been extensive discussion in the Indian press of the current production capability of Indian producers as Indian contemplates moving from an E5 to E10 mandate. Indian officials have admitted falling well short in procurement of the ethanol needed to meet the E5 mandate, while local producers and buyers have said they see no trouble in producing suppies to meet E10 if it is imposed. Meanwhile, Brazil has been urgently seeking new ethanol export markets after falling more than 80% short of its 2007 export targets in the wake of collapsed Nigerian and Venezuelan deals.
