48 hours: 3 blows to the Paraguayan people
Three decisions emphasize with clarity the empire of the agrobusiness, impunity and the injustice in Paraguay.
In less than 48 hours the national congress rejected a law of regulation of agrotóxicos (chemical substances including herbicides, chemical pesticides, hormones and seasonings), at the same time, the military justice released to an ex- general coup participant and civil justice released to one of the main defendant by the death of 400 people in the fire of the supermarket Ykua Bolaños. All these factors, in the present Paraguayan conjuncture, culminate in the maintenance of the structures of being able dominant, of a corrupt and authoritarian state, imposed by a policy that has already lasted more than 60 years.
Editorial in the site Indymedia Paraguay || Law of plaguicidas is blocked by agricultural exporters in Paraguay || Paraguay: rejection of the social organizations to the visit of Rodriguez and the Inter-American Commission of the Ethanol || OFFICIAL NOTICE: CONAMURI goes to the public opinion - REMIANDU PRAYS || OFFICIAL NOTICE: It is enough already of impunity to the agronegocios
Thursday morning the National Congress rejected the law on plaguicidas, a project to apply a minimum legislative frame to the use of agrotóxicos. A very burning and decisive subject for a country that has 2.5 million of has GMO soybeans and has become the 4th highest exporter of soybeans in the world. With this act, impunity of the agronegocios will stay that continue devastating the Paraguayan Earth and people. While in the congress one vowed, outside the organizations were summoned farmers and environmentalists, among them were relatives of deceased by fumigations.
Simultaneously and after much controversy Oviedo Linen[1] was released by a military court who granted conditional freedom to him. This ex- general related to the drug trafficking, condemned by attempt of defendant, coup d'etat of the murder of a vice-president and 9 young demonstrators in 1999, is a destabilizing element of the country because through his economic power and his malpractices and Populists he exerts a great influence in the national political board. Red Party governor has promoted the liberation of the ex- general to divide the opposition, that for the first time this with possibility of breaking the hegemony of this party in the power for more than 60 years.
As if this was not little, on the following day, also Víctor Paiva has been released, main shareholder of the supermarket Ykua Bolaños where in 2004 more than 400 people died in a fire. He and their father, Juan Pío Paiva, were accused to have issued the order to close the doors from the premises at the beginning of the fire, causing hundreds of deaths. These people are also great economic potentados and, they count on ample political support, thus they have managed to delay and to incidentar the taken judicial process in his against. Surprise it was released in a anxious political conjuncture, hours after the liberation of Oviedo.
When knowing itself the liberation Paiva, the victims of the fire and diverse organizations have left to pronounce themselves in repudiation of this measurement who consider to be a signal of unacceptable impunity. During the mobilization that afternoon they were repressed by the police in two occasions. The manifestation in repudiation to Oviedo Linen was united in front of to the mobilization the supermarket. In the following days they have been summoned to meetings to continue planning actions.

Paraguay needs more activists
rhodes 09.Sep.2007 16:19
Paraguay needs more help...needs more involved activits living there and taking stand. When I was there in 1998 there seemed to be very little going on in the form of activism. The political power dominates everything in Paraguay and it can be scary to be one of the few to take a stand. And to make it even scarier, last I heard the US military has set up a large base camp in Paraguay too - yikes!!!
There are so many Paraguayans without jobs, without food, without a place to live, and probably too scared to take a stand and fight for change out of fear that they might loose all that they have left (their lives and possibly their family). Positive political changes in Paraguay will no doubt change everything, as a horrbile pattern has been running for 60 years straight and needs to be brought to an end.
Let's not just let Paraguay be one more overlooked country!
