Cuban population shrinking
FOR the first time in the last quarter-century, Cuba’s population shrunk in 2006, with a registered decrease of approximately 4,300 inhabitants compared to the previous year.
That was stated by Juan Carlos Alfonso, director of the Center for the Study of Population and Development of the National Statistics Office, speaking at a scientific workshop that, sponsored by the Center for Women’s Studies of the Cuban Women’s Federation, took place on Tuesday, May 15, to mark the International Day of the Family.
The expert explained that the number of births also dropped significantly; in 2005, 120,716 babies were born, but that figure was 111,084 by the close of 2006.
