New York City: Police Go Nuts, Six Arrested after Anti-Minutemen Demo at Mexican Consulate
About 6 anarchists and SDS folks were arrested today at the anti-minutemen demo at the consulate. One of them is being charged with spitting on the floor, and the other five are charged with 1 misdemeanor count of inciting a riot and 2 misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct. They were at the 13th precinct at 21st st between 2nd and 3rd, but they're being moved to the tombs at 100 centre st i believe. There are gonna be folks outside the criminal courts there from now till morning, i presume, waiting until they get out. If anyone wants to get out there and show support, go for it. There are NLG people and mds and sds and nymaa and others working on getting bail, figuring out the next step.
Three or four minutemen groups organized a protest today at the mexican consulate. In response, a call went out to get there first and run out the racists. In the beginning, we were in the same pen until this one cop, srgnt Mirabel (the one with the yellow taser gun) went a bit nuts threatening to arrest everyone. We separated, had a pen on the same side of the street across from the entrance to the consulate. A couple hours of yelling, screaming, and chanting went by on both sides. A ton of different leftist and other groups came by (plp, nymaa, sds, dance, internationalist, rcp, iso), making the anti-minutemen group about 60-75 at its height, with the minutemen at about 30-40 at its height. During the screaming match, wild cop man mirabel opened the pen and grabbed this kid viciously. He was 17 i think. Noone knew why, but eventually, we found out the "spitting on the floor" charge. The demo continued until it was time for the minutemen to leave. The folks with black flags and black and red flags and others followed them, as the police escorted the minutemen away.
We were standing on the corner of e.39th and park ave, as the police and press escorted the mm away; waiting around thinking of what to do next (food or coffee?), the police came back and wild man Mirabel yelled "disperse now!" and threatened arrest. J said "this is a public sidewa--" when wild man mirabel said "come hear you motherfucker.." and started to chase him across the intersection going south. As J was running away, people chased after the cop. Then wild man mirabel turned around and grabbed P, and yelled to the others "get em!". Four others were grabbed; they were just standing in the wrong place. Some of them had flags, which i think the cops were going for. if wednesday night was a people's mini-riot at columbia, this was a mini-police riot. they kinda just went nuts, taking out the taser and mace, not using it, but threatening, and then grabbing whoever they could. their was 1 NLG guy there who had a camera and got it all. I hope those photos go up soon.
some people then went to the 13th precinct and sang chants and banged drums outside. Now i think most are on their way to 100 centre st, although we're not sure how long they'll be there (12-36 hours is the estimate).
The protest itself was quite a spectacle. Both sides calling each other racist, both sides with their own flags. The minutemen talking about saving the "american worker", the pro-immigrant group talking about "uniting the working class." To highten the spectacle even more, at the corner where the police riot and arrests took place, there were movie vans shooting a film.
The arrestees might get out tonight, or maybe tomorrow.
