Fidel receives Kofi Annan

PRESIDENT Fidel Castro Ruz received His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan, secretary general of the United Nations, last night (September 14), shortly after his arrival in our country.

During their fraternal encounter, the Cuban president and the UN leader of the exchanged opinions on the importance of the Non-Aligned Summit and other relevant international issues, such as the situation in the Middle East and the current reality in Africa.

Fidel thanked Kofi Annan for his presence in Cuba and presented him with an autographed copy of the second Cuban edition of the book Cien Horas con Fidel (One Hundred Hours with Fidel) and a tabloid version of the English translation of the book’s Chapter 24. In one of the dedications, he wrote: “To Kofi Annan, our infinite acknowledgment.”

Others present at the visit, which lasted one hour, were Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque and Rodrigo Malmierca, Cuba’s ambassador to the UN.
