New Anti-FTA Protests Jar Ecuador
Quito
Amid a stagnation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks with the US, the Ecuadorian government is facing Monday new protests against that deal.
Campesino and indigenous groups are moving to Quito to nix the FTA and defend the national sovereignty.
These actions precede a nationwide indigenous uprising slated for mid-April, agreed at the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of EcuadorĀ“s Assembly on Friday.
Hundreds of natives from Guayaqui, Guayas province, and farmers from El Coca and Rumichaca regions have departed for this capital to repeat their opposition against the agreement on Wednesday.
For these movements, only a referendum on the FTA plus the suspension of its talks in Washington can stop popular mobilizations in Ecuador.
