Nicaraguans to Receive Needed Eye Surgery in Venezuela

Mar 14
The first 100 Nicaraguan patients to undergo cataract operations in Venezuela as part of the “Operation Milagro” eye-surgery program are ready to travel to Caracas later this month to recover their sight.

According to the Prensa Latina news agency, the patients were evaluated and selected by the National Ophthalmologic Center this past weekend.

“In the selection process, we give top priority to the people in greatest need, most of them are elderly people,” explained Dr. Francisca Alvarado.

The decision to extend the Operation Milagro program to Nicaragua was announced in a press conference on Thursday by Venezuelan ambassador to Nicaragua, Miguel Gomez, and Minister of Health Margarita Gurdian.

The Operation Milagro initiative, sponsored by Cuba and Venezuela, aims to promote Latin American integration from a different angle other than merely economic cooperation. It is expected that some six million people will recover their sight over the next ten years thanks to this humanitarian initiative.
